Lakshya Sen will open his China Masters 2026 campaign against newly-crowned world champion Alex Lanier of France in a high-stakes first-round clash at the Shenzhen Sports Centre Gymnasium from 1 to 6 September. The BWF Super 750 tournament marks a significant competitive outing for a strong Indian contingent, several of whom are also part of India's squad for the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.

Lakshya vs Lanier: The Blockbuster First-Round Draw

World No. 13 Lakshya faces a formidable task against Lanier, who arrived in Shenzhen fresh from his historic triumph at the BWF World Championships in New Delhi, where he became the first Frenchman to claim the men's singles world title. The two have met once before — Lanier won in straight games in the quarter-finals of last year's Denmark Open.

Lakshya will be eager to reverse that result, having suffered an early exit at the World Championships himself, falling in the second round to USA's Garret Tan. The China Masters offers him a chance at redemption against the game's newest world No. 1.

India's Men's Singles and Doubles Challenge

Former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth, who finished runner-up at the US Open in June, adds considerable experience to India's men's singles challenge. In doubles, fourth-seeded pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty — ranked world No. 5 — spearhead India's campaign after winning the Singapore Badminton Open in May and reaching the quarter-finals of the World Championships. MR Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan will also compete in men's doubles.

Young Women's Singles Brigade in Focus

India's women's singles contingent comprises three rising stars. Unnati Hooda, 18, ranked world No. 25, made her World Championships debut and reached the second round before losing a tight three-game contest to Canada's Michelle Li. Tanvi Sharma, ranked world No. 26, claimed her maiden BWF World Tour title at the Taipei Open this season. Devika Sihag arrives in form after winning the Thailand Masters earlier this year. All three are part of India's Asian Games squad.

Notably, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu is absent from the tournament, as is Ayush Shetty, who produced a standout performance at the World Championships by defeating 2025 world champion Shi Yuqi in the opening round.

Mixed Doubles and Notable Absences

Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, along with Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde, will represent India in mixed doubles. India has no women's doubles entries — Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, who made history by winning bronze at the World Championships in New Delhi, are among those skipping Shenzhen.

Asian Games Rehearsal and a Historic Opportunity

As many as 11 of India's 20-player Asian Games badminton contingent — including Lakshya, Srikanth, Unnati, Tanvi, Devika, Satwiksairaj, Chirag, Arjun, Hariharan, Dhruv, and Tanisha — will be in action in Shenzhen, making the China Masters a crucial dress rehearsal ahead of the Asian Games from 19 September to 4 October.

The tournament also carries a historic dimension: no Indian player has won the China Masters since its inception in 2005. That unwanted record gives India's contingent extra motivation this week in Shenzhen.
