New Delhi, Dec 2 (NationPress) The head coach of Delhi Capitals, Hemang Badani, shared the challenging rationale behind the decision to release Faf du Plessis. He acknowledged the difficulty in bidding farewell to the South African star, who has been a significant contributor in the IPL, but emphasized that "it was crucial to shift focus towards younger talents."
Faf, who has been a part of 12 IPL seasons and missed only the 2013 edition since his debut in 2012, was among the seven players that DC let go before the mini auction. The veteran player, now 41, later chose to withdraw from the 19th season of the league, stating that he would "embrace a new challenge" in the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL).
"Releasing a player of Faf du Plessis' caliber was far from easy. It was an incredibly tough call given his exceptional track record in the IPL over the years. However, we decided it was time to pivot towards younger players who can bring a more dynamic style that aligns with our cricketing vision," Badani conveyed on JioStar.
Throughout his career, Faf has amassed 4,773 runs at an average of 35.09 across four franchises: Chennai Super Kings (2012-2015 and 2018-2021), Rising Pune Supergiant (2016-2017), Royal Challengers Bangalore (2022-2024), and Delhi Capitals (2025), clinching the tournament title twice with CSK.
Another noteworthy release from the DC lineup was Australian player Jake Fraser-McGurk, who was brought on board in 2024 as a promising prospect. His aggressive batting approach, which yielded 222 runs from just 81 balls, was a highlight for DC by season’s end.
Fraser-McGurk was reacquired via the right-to-match card ahead of IPL 2025, where he managed to score five runs in six matches, with a top score of 38 before being sidelined.
Reflecting on the decision to part ways with the young Australian, Badani noted, "We supported him based on his performance last season, but at a cost of nine crores, we didn’t feel we received sufficient value from that investment. Therefore, we deemed it best to release him as well. Overall, we are quite satisfied with our current squad."
