Uttarakhand pacer Akash Madhwal has reaffirmed that representing India remains his ultimate goal, stating that a single strong season could be the decisive push he needs to break into international cricket. Speaking in an exclusive interaction on Tuesday, 8 September, Madhwal made clear that the ambition driving him has not dimmed despite the fierce competition within India's pace-bowling ranks.

The Fifer That Defined Him — And the One He Still Wants

Madhwal etched his name into IPL folklore with a stunning 5 for 5 against the Lucknow Super Giants in the 2023 playoffs, one of the most economical five-wicket hauls in the tournament's history. Yet, by his own admission, that performance pales against what he truly craves. 'Obviously, a fifer for India! Everyone who plays cricket dreams of playing for India. To represent India. It's the same for us too… To do something for India. To make a name for ourselves. It's the same,' he said.

He went a step further, vowing to replicate the feat on the biggest stage: 'And the 5/5 that I picked in IPL for MI, I will do that for India too.'

From Tennis-Ball Grounds to Professional Cricket

Madhwal traced his cricketing journey back to its roots, recalling how he convinced his family to give him just one year to pursue the sport seriously. 'First of all, I started playing cricket out of passion. I asked my family for just one year. I told them I wanted to play cricket. I used to play with a tennis ball, and I had a love for cricket,' he said.

That passion, he insists, has never wavered. 'That passion for cricket is different. If I still get into the field, I don't know anything about the rest of the world. Cricket is very different,' he added. Every hour of preparation since those early days, he said, has been oriented towards a single objective: 'Whatever hard work is going on, whether it's tennis balls or whatever we started professionally, it's all so that we can play for India once. And we can represent India.'

More Than a Death-Over Specialist

Madhwal pushed back against the label of a one-dimensional bowler, arguing that his record for Uttarakhand in domestic cricket tells a fuller story. 'As a cricketer, I have represented Uttarakhand. In Uttarakhand, I started as a strike bowler. And I used to rely on my strength for Yorkers and the death overs. So, I was a complete pace bowler,' he said.

He acknowledged that the IPL environment — where he played alongside some of the world's top bowlers at Mumbai Indians (MI) — shaped how captains deployed him, but maintained that his capabilities extend well beyond a fixed role. 'I consider myself a pace bowler. It's not like I can only bowl at a certain limit. It's not like that,' he said, also pointing to his record in super-over situations as evidence of his composure under pressure.

Navigating India's Fierce Pace-Bowling Competition

Madhwal is candid about the challenge ahead. India's pace attack has been among the most competitive in world cricket, with a deep pool of international-quality bowlers making selection extraordinarily difficult. He acknowledged that adapting to modern cricket's demands will be central to his progress. 'There is a lot of competition for the bowling unit. We want to see how much we can improve. What variations can we bring? Because it is modern cricket. The sooner we adapt, the sooner we read the conditions, and the more chances we have to grow as a bowler,' he said.

His off-season approach, he explained, is built around ruthless self-assessment: identifying mistakes from the previous season, learning from them, and refining his execution. 'We are executing the platform that we are getting. We are taking it to perfection,' he added.

One Good Season Away

Madhwal's belief in his own trajectory is unshaken. 'I never want to leave the thing I am very attached to. And the dream of playing for India is still inside me. It's just a matter of one good season that will lead me up to the top,' he stated. With domestic tournaments and the next IPL cycle on the horizon, the Uttarakhand pacer will be looking to convert that conviction into a call-up that has so far remained just out of reach.
