Pune, Feb 17 (NationPress) The Maharashtra Esports Open Championship 2025 was officially inaugurated on Monday by Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse.
Khadse praised this groundbreaking state-supported tournament, highlighting that esports demands not only remarkable technical abilities but also significant mental resilience, rapid decision-making, and teamwork skills akin to those required in conventional sports.
Following its role as a demonstration sport at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games, esports achieved medal sport status at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games.
Hosted by the Federation of Electronic Sports Associations India (FEAI) and the Maratha Esports Association (MEA), the championship is set to feature 2100 competitors from across the state, with 52 finalists already qualifying for the Grand Finale.
“This event holds particular significance as it coincides with the International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s acknowledgment of esports' rising prominence, with the inaugural Olympic Esports Games scheduled for 2027. The IOC's endorsement has motivated nations, including India, to make considerable progress in endorsing esports as a legitimate sport. Maharashtra's proactive involvement in this initiative positions it as a pivotal participant in the digital sports revolution,” Khadse stated in her speech.
In a significant development for esports, the Government of India officially designated esports as a “multisport event” under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in December 2023, reinforcing its legitimacy. Furthermore, the government recently declared that esports athletes would receive cash rewards for exemplary performances, similar to traditional sports.
“The expansion of esports is making global headlines, with competitions like the 2023 Asian Games and world championships offering prizes that rival those of traditional sports leagues such as the IPL. Esports is also anticipated to be a key component of the 2027 Olympic Esports Games in Saudi Arabia, where competitors from around the globe will vie for medals for the first time in Olympic history,” the Minister added.
Maharashtra is poised to establish itself as the esports capital of India, thanks to the state’s dedication to enhancing infrastructure, financing, and opportunities for esports athletes.
“With over 500 million gamers in India, the esports industry is on the verge of explosive growth. As Maharashtra leads the way in fostering esports development, the state is optimistic that Indian players will soon bring home accolades from prestigious competitions like the Olympic Esports Games, Asian Games, and World Championships,” the Minister elaborated.
As India broadens its esports landscape, it is crucial for parents to recognize these attributes and encourage their children in pursuing esports, just as they would with other sports.
Attendees at the inauguration included Jet Synthesis chairman Siddhant Joshi, Jet Synthesis MD Rajan Nawani, MIT World Peace University vice-chancellor RM Chitnis, and FEAI president Vaibhav Dange.
