Lausanne, Feb 24 (NationPress) Malaysia is set to host the third edition of the FIH Hockey Men's Nations Cup from June 15-21, as announced by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Monday. This tournament will showcase eight competing teams: France, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Wales. The champions will secure a spot in the 2025-26 FIH Hockey Pro League, recognized as the premier league in global hockey.
This lineup is particularly remarkable, as all teams except Pakistan participated in the most recent FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup in 2023, according to the FIH's statement.
Initiated in 2021, the FIH Hockey Nations Cup aims to provide elite competition for the highest-ranked teams that are not part of the Hockey Pro League, allowing the winning team to earn promotion to the league for the subsequent season.
The inaugural two editions took place in Potchefstroom, South Africa (2022) and Gniezno, Poland (2024). The first Nations Cup was clinched by South Africa, while New Zealand emerged victorious in the second edition.
Subahan bin Kamal, president of the Malaysian Hockey Confederation, expressed, “We are thankful to FIH for trusting us with hosting this remarkable event for the first time. We are thrilled and confident that this tournament will showcase the finest hockey talents globally in Malaysia. We extend our gratitude to our Honorable Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh for her support in making this event happen.”
FIH chief Tayyab Ikram remarked, “It’s truly a pleasure to return to Malaysia for one of our significant events. Our hosts have consistently excelled in organizing hockey tournaments, and we anticipate the same for this Men’s Nations Cup, which will determine the winners' qualification for the upcoming edition of the FIH Hockey Pro League!”
