New Delhi, April 17 (NationPress) Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports Mansukh Mandaviya officially opened the Athlete Passport Management Unit (APMU) at the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) in New Delhi on Thursday. This initiative underscores India’s commitment to fostering clean and transparent sports practices on both national and international platforms.
During his address, Mandaviya stated, "APMU represents a significant step in India’s battle against doping, facilitating the ongoing monitoring of Athletes' Biological profiles via the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) system. This cutting-edge mechanism will aid in identifying doping trends and uphold the integrity of sports by exposing unethical practices."
Referring to the APMU as a guiding light for the Global South, the Union Minister expressed that it will assist neighboring nations that lack the resources to establish similar frameworks.
“By sharing our knowledge and tools, India can assist these countries in maintaining fairness in sports. Such initiatives embody the spirit of unity and contribute to the reinforcement of sports integrity across the Global South,” he further commented.
Mandaviya stressed the importance of regional collaboration, indicating India’s willingness to extend support to neighboring countries by sharing expertise and resources through the APMU. He pointed out the necessity for enhanced engagement from sports federations, organizations, universities, and early education institutions regarding doping and the establishment of awareness programs in rural areas.
Furthermore, he highlighted that scientists in laboratories could educate students from various schools and universities about anti-doping science to raise awareness regarding doping.
The NDTL’s APMU is structured to comply with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines, fortifying the global anti-doping program. By monitoring metrics such as blood and steroidal profiles over time, this unit will protect the credibility of clean athletes while ensuring a fair competitive environment in sports.
Significantly, this marks the 17th Athlete Passport Management Unit globally, being established in India. It will function as a specialized entity responsible for overseeing and managing the biological passports of athletes.
As India continues to shine on the global sports stage, the Athlete Passport Management Unit exemplifies the nation's strong dedication to upholding fair play and integrity in sports, setting a standard for ethical sports practices worldwide.
The event was attended by Sujata Chaturvedi, Secretary (Sports), Shri Kunal, Joint Secretary (Sports), other officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, along with eminent scientists and Prof. (Dr.) P. L. Sahu, Director & CEO(I/c), NDTL.
