Key Takeaways
Brisbane, Feb 24 (NationPress) Following India's six-wicket defeat to Australia in the opening ODI of the three-match series at Allan Border Field on Tuesday, acting captain Smriti Mandhana expressed optimism about her team's future prospects.
Despite the disappointing result, Mandhana stressed the importance of maintaining focus and not allowing a single setback to disrupt their strategy. "We began our innings losing two wickets early, which is always challenging. However, we showed resilience by making a strong comeback," she mentioned in her post-match comments.
India's top order struggled initially, with opener Pratika Rawal and number three batter Shafali Verma both dismissed cheaply. However, Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur both scored fifties, and a late contribution of 43 runs from Shree Charani helped India reach a modest total of 214 before being bowled out in the penultimate over.
Mandhana pointed out the difficulties presented by the pitch, revealing that it didn’t behave as they had expected. "The wicket didn’t play the way we thought it would," she remarked.
When questioned about the health of regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who missed the match due to injury, Mandhana was confident, stating, "I haven’t seen her yet, but I think she’ll recover well."
Harmanpreet had played a critical yet slow innings, scoring 53 runs off 84 balls before being dismissed by Ashleigh Gardner. She sustained a knee injury while fielding, struck by a ball from Megan Schutt, but showed determination by continuing to bat. Despite this, she did not take part in the second innings, leaving Mandhana to lead during Australia’s chase.
Mandhana was undeterred in her analysis of the match, encouraging her team to remain grounded and to focus on the challenges ahead. "We’ve been playing good cricket, so we won’t make drastic changes after just one loss," she reflected on India’s commendable form throughout the tour.
Despite the defeat, Mandhana remained hopeful, believing that the team has enough momentum to recover.
She reiterated the team's commitment, saying, “We need to unite as a batting lineup and post a competitive total. However, we won’t dwell on it too much. We have two days to reflect and will return stronger."
The two teams are set to travel to Hobart for the second ODI, scheduled for Friday.
