How Did Medvedev Secure His Spot in Brisbane QF?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Brisbane, Jan 7 (NationPress) Daniil Medvedev, the top seed, dominated former world No. 10 Frances Tiafoe on Wednesday, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International. Following a strong first-round performance against Marton Fucsovics, the 29-year-old Russian showcased an hour of exceptional tennis, claiming a victory of 6-3, 6-2.
Medvedev delivered an impressive 21 winners, including nine aces, which was nearly double that of his opponent. He won an impressive 91% of first-serve points and faced no break points.
“The court is quite fast, so serving well is crucial, and I’m pleased with my performance. It felt better than in the first round. From the very first point, I applied pressure on my opponent, managing to secure a few solid games on his serve. That was sufficient today; that’s just how tennis works sometimes,” Medvedev stated.
In another match, reigning champion Jiri Lehecka had to retire due to a right ankle injury while trailing 3-6, 2-1 against American Sebastian Korda.
Lehecka’s withdrawal led to a quarterfinal match between Korda and Alex Michelsen, who had earlier defeated eighth seed Learner Tien, resulting in an all-American showdown.
Meanwhile, fourth seed Jessica Pegula kicked off her season with a win, overcoming Anna Kalinskaya with scores of 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to progress to the third round in Brisbane.
Pegula improved her head-to-head record against Kalinskaya to 4-1 after twice rallying from a break down in the final set.
“I can’t believe I faced Anna in my first match of the year. We had numerous intense battles last year, making this a genuine test for me today, especially since I had a bye in the first round and hadn’t played any matches yet,” Pegula commented.
“I knew it would be challenging; she’s an exceptional player who can really dictate the game and change the ball’s direction effectively. I managed to adapt just in time and played well, perhaps getting a bit lucky along the way too,” she added.
