Navi Mumbai, Jan 14 (NationPress) Former Australian cricketer and UP Warriorz captain Meg Lanning has made history by becoming the third player in the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026 to exceed the 1,000-run milestone during the seventh match against Delhi Capitals at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
This remarkable achievement places Lanning in an exclusive circle alongside England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt and India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur, as these three batters epitomize excellence through their consistency, impact, and success in the brief yet extraordinary history of the WPL.
With a total of 1,050 runs, Lanning ranks among the top scorers in WPL history, trailing only Sciver-Brunt with 1,101 and closely followed by Harmanpreet with 1,016. The elite top five also includes Australia’s Ellyse Perry (972) and Shafali Verma (887), showcasing the high level of talent and competition in the league just after its inception.
The 33-year-old Lanning, a right-handed batter and medium pacer, achieved this milestone after three outstanding years with Delhi Capitals (DC) from 2023 to 2025, where she led the team to a record of finishing as runners-up each year. Her individual performance in the inaugural season of WPL was exceptional, amassing 345 runs at a strike rate of 139.11, including two half-centuries, significantly contributing to her team's success.
Lanning, who debuted in international Test cricket in August 2013, continued her impressive run in the following two seasons with 331 runs in 2024 and 276 runs in 2025. After being released by DC prior to WPL 2026, she was picked up by UP Warriorz, who appointed her as captain for the current season.
The WPL 2026 commenced on January 9 and is scheduled to conclude on February 5, with the championship match set to take place at the BCA Stadium (Kotambi) in Vadodara.
