New Delhi, Oct 20 (NationPress) Former India captain Mithali Raj evaluated the team's efforts following their defeat to England in the Women's World Cup. She praised India's performance, citing several solid partnerships, and noted that the match slipped away after the dismissals of Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma.
India faced their third straight loss in the tournament, falling short against the four-time World Cup champions, despite another commendable batting display. The England team, led by Nat Sciver-Brunt, set a challenging target of 289 runs, bolstered by an excellent century from their former captain, Heather Knight.
The Indian squad showed promise during the chase, with Smriti, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Deepti all scoring half-centuries. However, they managed only 284/6 in their 50 overs, falling short by just four runs.
"I think they performed well in the chase. At one point, the target was under a run a ball. There were excellent partnerships, first between Harmanpreet and Smriti, and then between Smriti and Deepti. The critical moment came when Smriti played a particular shot, followed by Deepti Sharma's wicket. Those two dismissals were pivotal because they had stabilized the innings after losing early wickets and put India in a good position for the chase," Mithali stated on JioStar.
"When you're set, it's important to be calculated. Yes, take risks, but choose the right balls and bowlers. After hitting a boundary off the first ball of that over, Deepti aimed to clear the longest boundary but ended up finding the fielder, which was disappointing," she added.
After some underwhelming performances, Kaur stepped up, scoring a crucial run-a-ball 70 before being dismissed by her rival captain. Mithali commented on the Indian captain's form, noting, "She was in command from the moment she came in. She timed the ball beautifully and exuded confidence. Smriti took a while to settle, but Harman was scoring quickly, hitting boundaries, and rotating the strike effectively.
"There was a sense of composure between them—no panic, no rush. Yes, she might have mistimed that shot, but it was a good catch. Nonetheless, it doesn't detract from the fact that she’s among the runs, which is a positive sign for India."
