Bhubaneswar, March 24 (NationPress) As India prepares to host the 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championships, the city of Bhubaneswar is set to kick off the inaugural edition of the National Indoor Athletics Championships over two days, providing a solid foundation for athletes gearing up for this major event.

The National Indoor Athletics Championships will commence on Tuesday at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, marking a transformative moment in Indian athletics, according to Athletics Federation of India (AFI) president Bahadur Singh Sagoo.

“Athletes are thrilled to begin this new chapter in their athletics journey,” Sagoo shared with reporters during a press briefing on Monday.

This first edition of the National Indoor Championships has seen an impressive turnout of 278 participants, including 97 female competitors, and is expected to be a significant boost for upcoming events, according to Sagoo.

“This two-day indoor event, featuring both budding and seasoned athletes, will serve as an excellent platform to hone their skills on the 200m indoor track,” he remarked.

Among the competitors is Odisha’s promising international sprinter, Animesh Kujur, who is eager to showcase his speed in the 60m sprint. “I’m looking forward to kicking off the 2026 competitive season positively, especially competing in my first indoor event on home turf,” stated the holder of the national outdoor records in the 100m and 200m.

Meanwhile, Praveen Chithravel, the national outdoor record holder in men’s triple jump and a seasoned competitor in various indoor contests across Europe and Asia, is set to participate in the men’s long jump. “The energy during indoor competitions is electrifying,” Chithravel expressed. “The intimate setting of an indoor track allows athletes to connect with fans, thereby enhancing their confidence.”

The Director of Sports for Odisha, Veddula Vijay, praised the new indoor facility in Bhubaneswar, stating, “The government-operated indoor arena at Kalinga Stadium provides athletes with a significant opportunity to train regardless of the weather.”

The first medal event on the opening day, Tuesday, will be the men’s 3,000m track race, which will take place across both senior and U20 categories. The competitions will conclude on Wednesday.
