Kiwis' Coaches Ronchi and Oram to Lead Islamabad United in PSL 2026
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Auckland, March 13 (NationPress) New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has officially permitted assistant coaches Luke Ronchi and Jacob Oram to take a leave of absence in order to join Islamabad United for the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026, which is set to commence later this month.
Ronchi, who played for the franchise from 2017 to 2021, will step back into the role of head coach for Islamabad United, while Oram has been named as one of his supporting assistants. With the PSL kicking off on March 26 and continuing until late April, including the finals, both coaches will be absent during New Zealand's forthcoming series against South Africa and the tour to Bangladesh in April.
Mike Sandle, New Zealand's performance manager, expressed that both the team management and NZC fully support the duo in their pursuit of this coaching opportunity.
“This presents an excellent opportunity for Luke and Jake to enhance their coaching experience and develop their skills outside of the New Zealand cricket framework,” Sandle mentioned in a statement.
“Just like our players, our coaches are sought after globally, and we are confident that Luke and Jake will gain valuable insights during their time at the PSL, which will benefit both the BLACKCAPS and NZC in the future,” he added.
Sandle further stated that Jonny Bassett-Graham, head coach of the Wellington Blaze, along with NZC network coach Graeme Aldridge, will assist head coach Rob Walter for the upcoming series against South Africa. Additionally, Brendon Donkers from the Canterbury cricket team will be included in the support staff for the Bangladesh tour.
“One of the significant advantages of Luke and Jake heading to the PSL is the chance it provides for other coaches within the NZC network,” Sandle noted.
“Having Jonny, Graeme, and Brendon join the BLACKCAPS will undoubtedly enrich their experiences and allow them to collaborate with our players and support staff,” he continued.
“Their participation will naturally strengthen our high-performance coaching depth, and we hope the coaches will be able to integrate some of their newfound knowledge to benefit the domestic frameworks,” Sandle concluded.
New Zealand is set to face South Africa in the opening match of a five-match T20I series at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Sunday, with the series scheduled to feature double-headers alongside matches involving the New Zealand women’s team and South Africa women’s team.
