Paarl, Jan 21 (NationPress) The spinners of Paarl Royals continue their impressive performance at their Boland Park home ground, leading the team to the pinnacle of the SA20 standings after a successful six-wicket victory over the Joburg Super Kings.

The Royals' spin attack, consisting of Bjorn Fortuin, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Joe Root, and Dunith Wellalage, effectively restricted the Super Kings to a modest total of 146/6.

Fortuin initiated the downfall of the JSK batsmen, capturing two wickets during the Powerplay, which set the stage for Mujeeb (1-28) and the remaining bowlers.

“I’m very pleased with the outcome. It was a wicket where we relied on spin, and it paid off. I had numerous options at one point, which was beneficial. We had them under pressure, although the last two overs were not ideal; that’s just the way the game goes. I believed it was a par score,” stated Royals captain David Miller.

Had it not been for England’s Jonny Bairstow (60 runs off 40 balls) and Donovan Ferreira’s unbeaten 32 runs off 19 balls, the Super Kings would have ended with a significantly lower score, as they managed to accumulate 65 runs in the last five overs.

“I felt we posted a competitive score. The early wickets taken by their bowlers put us in a tough position, and credit to them,” Bairstow remarked.

“If you attack too early, you could find yourself in deep trouble, but if you're bold enough to hold wickets until the end, you can take advantage of the shorter boundaries. Having myself and Don to capitalize on that was fantastic, although we may have been 15-20 runs short.”

Despite the late surge from the Super Kings, the Royals smoothly chased down the target, finishing with six wickets to spare. This victory marks the Royals' third consecutive win.

The competition's leading run-scorer, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, seems to thrive at his new home ground, contributing another brisk 27 runs off 14 balls to go along with his two previous half-centuries at this beautiful venue.

“The top-order batsmen performed exceptionally well, giving us a strong start that put us ahead in the match,” added Miller.

A brief setback occurred when seamer Hardus Viljoen (2/23) dismissed both Pretorius and Joe Root in quick succession, but the Royals maintained control over the chase.

This season, Miller has excelled in his role as a finisher, forming a 71-run partnership with Mitchell van Buuren (44 off 45 balls) for the fourth wicket.

Miller capped off the innings in style with a massive six off Lutho Sipamla, placing the Royals in a prime position to secure a playoff berth.

“We possess a versatile squad that adapts to conditions. In the past two years, we started strong but faltered towards the end, which we are mindful of. We’re well-prepared for now,” he concluded.
