New Delhi, Dec 17 (NationPress) Following the excitement of the FIH Hockey Men's Junior World Cup, where the Indian team secured a bronze medal after a thrilling 4-2 victory against Argentina, players are now eager to showcase their talents in the upcoming Hero Hockey India League (HIL).
The Women's HIL is set to kick off in Ranchi on December 28, while the Men's HIL will commence in Chennai on January 3.
The junior athletes understand the league's importance, especially with chief coach Craig Fulton keeping a close eye on their performances.
Dilraj Singh, who netted five goals during the tournament, remarked, "Winning a medal at the Junior World Cup is incredible, but excelling in the Hockey India League is the next crucial step toward making the senior team. We know we’ll be under scrutiny, and performing well in the HIL alongside senior players from various countries is vital."
Dilraj will represent SG Pipers this season. His teammate, Anmol Ekka, who was named player of the match for his stunning goals in the bronze medal match, echoed the sentiment of striving for excellence in January. "I’m excited to join Ranchi Royals this season, playing with Loick Luypeart and Tom Boon, both renowned for their penalty corner expertise, and I’m eager to learn from them. This experience will be instrumental in my pursuit of a spot in the senior core group," Ekka explained.
Arshdeep Singh, who played a key role in the Indian forward line with impressive assists and a hat-trick during the round-robin stage, is set to represent Hyderabad Toofans.
"I’m genuinely thrilled and looking forward to the Hockey India League season. We’ve seen how this league has previously aided players in joining the senior squad," he stated.
Amit Rohidas, a notable figure in Indian hockey, is a prime example of the HIL’s impact, as his time with Kalinga Lancers revitalized his career in 2017. His story resonates strongly with our junior players.
"We recognize the league's significance, and the upcoming year is critical for us as we aim for senior squad inclusion. If we don’t shine now, the path to the senior team will be challenging, requiring outstanding performances in national competitions," Arshdeep added.
All junior talents have been selected for the six HIL franchises competing for the championship this season. The opening match will feature Tamil Nadu Dragons against Hyderabad Toofans at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium in Chennai.
