New Delhi, June 16 (NationPress) The former captain of Australia, Ricky Ponting, has stated that Aiden Markram’s stunning 136, which played a crucial role in South Africa's victory at the ICC World Test Championship Final held at Lord’s, is equally significant as any other match-winning display in a championship match.
Following a disappointing duck in the first innings, Markram rose to the occasion and delivered a spectacular 136, which included 14 boundaries, as South Africa successfully chased down 282 runs before lunch on the fourth day, achieving a major ICC championship victory after enduring 27 years of disappointments in knockout tournaments.
“When reflecting on major ICC events, the first thing that usually comes to mind are World Cup finals. Then there are innings like Travis Head's (137) in the World Cup final, and the last World Test Championship final (163).
“This innings must be regarded as just as impressive as any of those, given the context, and considering the recent struggles of South African cricket, especially with their Test squad,” Ponting remarked on ICC Digital.
Markram’s exceptional performance at Lord’s follows his exclusion from the tour of Australia in the 2022/23 season, after a tough run with the bat. However, his innings of 115 against the West Indies and another century against India in Cape Town marked a significant comeback in Tests.
“Being able to step up and deliver when your team needs you the most is what defines a player's reputation. Everyone has always recognized Aiden Markram's talent. I remember being surprised a couple of years ago when he was not included in the squad for the tour of Australia,” Ponting added.
“Now, here we are, a couple of years later, and he has played what could be one of his finest innings. If you asked him, he would likely say this is the knock he takes the most pride in during his Test career, and I am certain his teammates who witnessed it would feel the same. This is a significant personal achievement for him and a remarkable accomplishment for the South African team,” Ponting concluded.
