New Delhi, Sep 12 (NationPress) South African cricket icon Allan Donald expressed his delight over the promising growth and development of Proteas youngsters, which is sure to create a selection dilemma for national team head coach Shukri Conrad as he prepares for the squad heading to the subcontinent for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
South Africa narrowly missed out on victory against India in the finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup. However, after breaking their ICC trophy drought by defeating Australia in the 2025 World Test Championship final, the Proteas are set to emerge as a formidable force, bolstered by a youthful core ready to challenge the cricketing elite.
As part of the lead-up to SA20 Season 4, Donald provided exclusive insights regarding team strategies, marquee signings, and standout players to look out for during a special interaction organized by SA20.
"This is precisely what we aspire to see in our country. Young talents like Dewald Brevis have already made a name for themselves. Lhuan-dre Pretorius is gaining invaluable experience; we have discussed Mulder establishing his role. Connor Esterhuizen has emerged from obscurity, stating, 'Pick me.' Kwena Maphaka is already part of the setup, and Andile Simelane has had his chance. Talents like Ottneil Baartman may have been overlooked, yet Kyle Verreynne is eager to prove himself worthy of selection for that crucial flight.
"This is what we want to witness—the strength that this competition brings. SA20 accelerates the rise of emerging players, and South Africa is facing exciting challenges. This league is successful in showcasing young cricketers, providing everyone the opportunity to tell Shukri Conrad, 'I want to be part of your squad.' This is precisely what we desire, complicating his selection process.
"The momentum keeps building, and the crowds are growing. I am incredibly proud to witness the evolution of this competition and the caliber of players, particularly the young talents, swiftly making their mark. This is what we want to see," Donald remarked during a virtual conference with IANS.
During the SA20 season 4 auction, a staggering R116.9 million (approximately Rs 59 crore) was invested in South African players, which included R22.8 million (approximately INR 11.4 crore) dedicated to 12 Under-23 players, with the 22-year-old Dewald Brevis fetching an impressive R16.5 million, becoming the highest-priced player in SA20 auction history.
