Raphinha Calls Out Refereeing as 'Robbery' After Barcelona's Champions League Exit
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Madrid, April 15 (NationPress) Barcelona's forward, Raphinha, did not mince words as he expressed his discontent, delivering a strong critique of the officiating after his team's exit from the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
Despite Barcelona's 2–1 victory in the second leg, it wasn't enough to overcome a 2–0 deficit from the initial match, resulting in a 3–2 aggregate loss to their Spanish opponents.
“In my opinion, this match was a robbery. Not only this match but the previous one too. The officiating was horrendous; the decisions made by [Turpin] are astonishing,” he stated, as reported by the BBC.
“I'm unsure how many fouls Atletico committed, but the referee failed to issue a single yellow card to them. I truly want to understand why there's this fear of Barcelona winning,” Raphinha further remarked.
The Brazilian striker, who was sidelined due to injury for both matches, also highlighted a recurring theme in the officiating during the two encounters.
“It was challenging, especially realizing you have to exert three times the effort to secure a win. I believe this tie was quite misleading from my perspective. While everyone can make errors; we are all human. However, when mistakes consistently occur in the same manner, that warrants our attention,” he observed.
The matches saw Barcelona reduced to ten players in both instances due to VAR interventions. Defender Pau Cubarsi received a red card in the first leg from referee Istvan Kovacs, while Eric Garcia was sent off in the second leg by Clement Turpin, with both yellow cards escalated to red for denying goal-scoring chances.
Barcelona had also raised alarms regarding a first-leg incident involving Atletico defender Marc Pubill, who seemingly handled the ball in the penalty area. However, both Kovacs and VAR official Christian Dingert allowed play to proceed.
Barcelona filed a formal complaint with UEFA over what they described as a significant lack of VAR intervention; they sought acknowledgment of the error, but the governing body rejected their appeal on Tuesday, labeling the protest as inadmissible.
This defeat extends Barcelona's wait for the Champions Trophy, which has now reached 11 years, while Atletico Madrid has advanced to the semi-finals and aims to pursue their first Champions League title. Madrid has reached the finals thrice but has finished as runners-up each time.
