Chennai, Feb 26 (NationPress) Zimbabwe's captain, Sikandar Raza, acknowledged that his bowlers struggled to implement their defensive strategies, which ultimately resulted in a 72-run defeat against India during the Super Eights match held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday. The Zimbabwean bowlers displayed a lack of discipline, allowing India to amass a total of 256/4.

“I definitely believe we could have executed our defensive approach more effectively. We seemed to charge at them aggressively, but there was a noticeable inconsistency in our bowling performance, which allowed them to score freely,” Raza remarked during the post-match presentation.

“Once the match momentum shifts like that, it becomes challenging to regain control. I feel that if we had executed our defensive plans more effectively, we might have limited their score to around 210 or 220, and from there, who knows?”

India's batting lineup took full advantage of Zimbabwe's wayward bowling, with Abhishek Sharma scoring 55 off 30 balls, Hardik Pandya smashing an unbeaten 50 off 23, and Tilak Varma contributing 44 runs off just 16 balls, leading India to the second-highest total in T20 World Cup history, featuring a record 17 sixes.

In response, Zimbabwe's innings, spearheaded by Brian Bennett's solid unbeaten 97, ended at 184/6—commendable in the circumstances yet never able to pose a real threat to the target. “I tend to focus on the positives. Compared to the last game, where we chased a total of 250, I felt there was some panic in our batting lineup,” Raza noted.

“You can’t win a match in the first six overs, but you can certainly lose it when chasing a large total. Today, our batting was much more composed in the initial overs. We aimed to give ourselves a genuine opportunity. Compared to the previous match, I believe we can take several positives from today’s performance,” he added.

When asked about his broader evaluation of the team now that they are out of contention for the semi-finals, Raza stated, “Yes, our batting was up to par, but we need to improve in both bowling and fielding. The previous game taught us valuable lessons on how to approach chasing a big total. We are a work in progress.”

“Many of our players are experiencing their first World Cup and their first time in India. While I don’t want to use that as an excuse, the lessons learned from our last match were taken to heart. You can see the eagerness of these young players to improve, which was evident today.”

Having exited the competition, Zimbabwe will face South Africa in their final Super Eight match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday afternoon, with only pride at stake. Raza sees this as a chance to harmonize all three aspects of their game as they did during the qualifying rounds and emphasized the standards he expects from the team.

“The outcome will take care of itself, but I am looking for a significantly improved performance in terms of fielding and bowling. I hope we can maintain our batting form and continue to build on it. If we can synchronize all three departments like we did in the qualifiers, we’ll give ourselves the best chance to win.”

“In a World Cup against top teams, all three departments need to function well. If any one of them falters, the game slips away quickly. Therefore, in the last game, we aim to put forth our best effort and address all three areas, which should give us a better chance of victory.
