New Delhi, Dec 8 (NationPress) India’s seam-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur expressed that veteran opener Rohit Sharma played a pivotal role in making him feel at ease and promoting self-expression, which he is looking forward to experiencing once again during the Mumbai Indians' camp for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
Prior to the retentions, Thakur was traded from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to the Mumbai Indians, a franchise where he initially served as a support bowler in 2010. "Abhi aur pata chalega jab sath me baithenge toh. Kaafi masti hogi. He made me comfortable, he allowed me to be free with him, and he allowed me to express myself. We became comfortable with each other, and he played a major part in it,” Thakur shared, as quoted by the franchise’s website on Monday.
Having played 13 Tests, 47 ODIs, and 25 T20Is for India, Thakur remarked that the exposure to the MI dressing room environment back in 2010 instilled a sense of professionalism within him, motivating him to aim for greater achievements in his cricketing journey.
“I was made to play practice games. I bowled with a new ball, which significantly boosted my morale and confidence, and I was able to take wickets. I was fortunate to have experienced the dressing room early in my career,” Thakur stated.
“I was already feeling comfortable around senior players. The way I was treated during my time with the Mumbai Indians and that small gesture from the team greatly contributed to my growth as a cricketer,” he added.
Currently participating for Mumbai in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Thakur also acknowledged MI Director of Cricket Rahul Sanghvi and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey for their daily guidance and insights that have shaped his development as a professional cricketer.
“I had the opportunity to see legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, Munaf Patel, Andrew Symonds, Rohit Sharma, and Ambati Rayudu and share the same dressing room with them. It felt surreal,” he concluded.
The Mumbai Indians, alongside the Chennai Super Kings, stand as the most accomplished franchises in the Indian Premier League, each having clinched five titles. MI aims to further strengthen their squad by including Thakur, hoping to secure their sixth title in the upcoming IPL 2026.
