Sunrisers Eastern Cape will defend their SA20 title against Pretoria Capitals in a rematch of last season's final when the fifth edition of the league kicks off on 17 January 2027 at St George's Park, Gqeberha. Cricket South Africa unveiled the full fixture list on Thursday, 23 July, with the tournament running through to the SA20 Final on 21 February 2027 at Newlands, Cape Town.

Opening Fixture and Season Format

The curtain-raiser at St George's Park pits the three-time defending champions against a Pretoria Capitals side that reached the Season 4 final following a dramatic turnaround — appointing former India captain Sourav Ganguly as head coach and Keshav Maharaj as skipper. The Capitals had suffered first-round exits in the two editions prior to Season 4, making their run to the final a notable revival.

The league stage will span all six host venues across South Africa, with four Saturday double-headers scheduled on 23 January, 30 January, 6 February, and 13 February. The first of those will see Durban's Super Giants host Pretoria Capitals at Kingsmead, followed by Joburg Super Kings taking on Sunrisers Eastern Cape at The Wanderers later the same evening.

What the League Commissioner Said

SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith described the fixture release as the first major milestone of the new season. 'Announcing the SA20 fixtures is always a big moment for us — it means the wheels are in motion as we build towards an incredible month of cricket,' Smith said.

He added: 'There is no better way to start Season 5 than with a repeat of one of the most thrilling finals in our history. Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Pretoria Capitals served up a classic in Cape Town last season, and it's fitting that they're the two teams out in the middle when the season gets underway in Gqeberha on 17 January 2027.'

Playoff Schedule and Venues

The knockout stage introduces a notable first: Boland Park, Paarl will host Qualifier 1 on 16 February, marking the venue's debut as a playoff host in the league's history. The Wanderers, Johannesburg will stage the Eliminator on 17 February and Qualifier 2 on 19 February. Newlands will then host the Final on 21 February — for the second successive year and the third time overall.

Smith highlighted the significance of bringing playoff cricket to Paarl: 'The Paarl fans have been some of the most passionate supporters of the league, so I'm excited that we are finally able to give them a playoff in the form of Q1.'

Cape Town's Role and City Response

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis welcomed the city's continued role as the league's championship venue. 'Cape Town is proud to once again host the SA20 Final and to do so as our city gears up for an extraordinary year of cricket,' Hill-Lewis said, also noting that the city will host the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in the same year.

Notably, Sunrisers Eastern Cape head into Season 5 having maintained their consistency through changes in personnel and captaincy, under head coach Adrian Birrell. The opening-day rematch with Pretoria Capitals sets up what could be an early indicator of the season's title race. All eyes will be on Gqeberha come 17 January 2027.
