Singapore, May 30 (NationPress) The Indian men's doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty achieved a remarkable victory by overcoming the world No. 1 Malaysian duo of Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin to secure a spot in the semifinals of the Singapore Open on Friday at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
The Indian pair clinched the match in straight games, winning 21-17, 21-15 in just 39 minutes. This marks their third semifinal appearance this season. Previously, they faced setbacks in the semifinal rounds at the Malaysia Open and the India Open. Notably, it was Goh and Izzuddin who eliminated Satwik and Chirag during the India Open.
Now, Satwik and Chirag aim to reach their first final of the season as they prepare to compete against another Malaysian team, either the eighth seed combination of Man Wei Chong and Kai Wun Tee or the third seed duo of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.
The men’s doubles team stands as the last Indian representatives in the tournament after other notable players like PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, and Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand were eliminated.
In women's singles, double Olympic medalist Sindhu exited in the second round, falling to China’s Chen Yu Fei with scores of 9-21, 21-18, 16-21. HS Prannoy faced a straight-game defeat against Frenchman Christo Popov, losing 16-21, 14-21 in a match lasting 42 minutes.
The mixed doubles team of Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Gadde also faced an early exit, losing to the second-seeded pair of Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet of Hong Kong with scores of 10-21, 16-21.
The eighth-seeded duo of Treesa-Gayatri had their journey cut short in the quarterfinals against the unseeded Chinese pair of Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian.
Earlier in the women's singles, Aakarshi Kashyap and Unnati Hooda were unable to advance past the first round. Aakarshi lost to world No. 4 Han Yue in a hard-fought match that ended 21-17, 13-21, 7-21, while Unnati succumbed to world No. 2 Wang Zhi Yi with scores of 21-13, 9-21, 15-21.

In the men’s singles, India's top-ranked player Lakshya Sen had to retire during his opening match. Sen started strong against Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chun-Yi, winning the first game 21-15, but Lin fought back to take the second game 21-17. Sen faced challenges due to lower back pain in the deciding game and retired while trailing 5-13.
