Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Eugene, April 19 (NationPress) In a thrilling display of athletic prowess, India’s Selva Prabhu triumphed at the Oregon Team Invitational 2026, clinching the men's triple jump title. The event took place at the renowned Hayward Field, where the 21-year-old athlete achieved a remarkable jump of 16.61m, securing first place in the competition.
Demonstrating remarkable consistency, Selva also recorded impressive jumps of 16.57m and 16.37m throughout the event. Apalos Edwards followed in second place with a jump of 16.53m, while Jhavor Bennett finished third with a distance of 16.11m.
Having previously earned a silver medal at the World Athletics U20 Championships 2022, Selva has been on an upward trajectory this season. His personal best of 17.05m, recorded at the NCAA Indoor Championships 2026 in Fayetteville, stands as the Indian indoor national record for this event.
At the national level, the overall men's triple jump record belongs to Praveen Chithravel, who achieved a distance of 17.37m on two occasions.
Selva Prabhu's victory in Oregon marks his third title of the current season. He kicked off the year by winning the Thane Baker athletics meet in Manhattan, Kansas this January, achieving a jump of 16.49m. This performance surpassed the qualifying standard of 16.28m set by the Athletics Federation of India for the Asian Games 2026.
However, meeting the qualification mark does not guarantee selection for the Indian team. According to the Athletics Federation of India, athletes need to compete in at least three domestic events, including mandatory state-level competitions, to qualify.
Earlier this month, Selva also excelled at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, securing first place with a jump of 15.76m. Throughout the season, he has consistently performed well, finishing as a runner-up in three other events.
The Oregon Team Invitational is categorized as a Category E meet on the World Athletics calendar.
