Vizag, Aug 31 (NationPress) Former Pro Kabaddi League standout Rishank Devadiga shared his thoughts on the leadership of Gujarat Giants captain Mohammadreza Shadloui, particularly during his last-minute raid in the tiebreaker against U Mumba in PKL 12. He noted that the Iranian displayed a degree of overconfidence and seemed lost at times.
The Gujarat Giants launched their PKL 12 journey with a valiant effort against U Mumba, narrowly missing victory in a tense tiebreaker. After ending regulation play at a 29-29 stalemate, the match was decided by a tiebreaker, which U Mumba won 6-5.
"There was certainly a touch of overconfidence in him. Shadloui faced immense pressure and appeared confused at certain moments. As captain, he needed to better assess the game's flow. During that final raid, Sunil approached, willing to concede a point, and Shadloui should have embraced that opportunity," stated Devadiga on JioHotstar.
Expert Sunil Taneja on JioStar also commented on Shadloui's bold pre-game assertion of being the best and how U Mumba captain Sunil Kumar disproved him during the match.
“I spoke with Sunil after the match as he accepted his award. He reiterated what he said on the mic: Shadloui had declared, ‘I am the best.’ But how can one merely claim to be the best? The matches determine that. Sunil doesn’t take kindly to such claims—if you challenge him, he won’t hold back," he remarked.
Taneja compared Shadloui's captaincy to that of Sumit Sangwan of UP Yoddhas in their respective PKL 12 openers, highlighting the visible contrast: "Both Shadloui and Sumit are new captains, but Shadloui appeared shaken under pressure, whereas Sumit kept his composure, scoring 8 points in his first game (Match 3 against Telugu Titans).
“Taking on the captaincy, especially as a left corner, comes with great responsibility. With Nitesh absent, Hitesh stepped in. Last season was similar, but regardless of a new partner, a captain must not show fear. Sumit executed excellent tackles and was only dismissed once throughout the match. That’s how a captain should lead by example," he added.
The Giants now turn their attention to their upcoming match against Puneri Paltan on Monday.
