TNPL shaped my cricket journey, says Shahrukh Khan after Kovai Kings title
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tamil Nadu batter Shahrukh Khan has credited the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) as a transformative platform for cricketers from the state, calling its growth over the years 'immense' and pointing to its role in producing IPL-ready talent. His remarks came after he captained Kovai Kings to their third TNPL championship in the 2026 season.
Kovai Kings Clinch Third Title
Kovai Kings defeated Madurai Panthers by 84 runs in the final held at MA Chidambaram Stadium on 28 August 2026. Andre Siddarth played a key role with a quickfire 82 off 47 balls, helping Kovai post a commanding total. Their bowlers then skittled Madurai for just 98, sealing a dominant victory.
TNPL as a Launchpad for Tamil Nadu Cricketers
Shahrukh, who has spent nearly two decades in the Tamil Nadu cricket circuit, views the TNPL as far more than a personal milestone. 'TNPL has been a platform for a lot of players from Tamil Nadu, including me, Natarajan, Varun Chakravarthy, a lot of players,' he said. The league, which began in 2016, was the first state-level T20 domestic tournament in India and has since become a key fixture in the Tamil Nadu cricket calendar.
'And the way the tournament has grown over the years is just immense. And not just TNPL but the other leagues that happen around India as well. But the first domestic tournament for a state T20 was TNPL and very fortunate to be a part of this tournament,' Shahrukh added. He expressed hope that IPL scouts would continue identifying fresh talent from the competition, helping it grow further.
Captaincy Roots: From Tamil Nadu Leagues to MS Dhoni
Shahrukh traces the foundation of his captaincy philosophy to the local Tamil Nadu league structure rather than the high-profile stages he has played on. He specifically credited Ashwin Venkatraman, a prominent figure in the Tamil Nadu league circuit, for shaping his tactical understanding. 'He has been really vital in terms of how to go about in a game of cricket and how to read a batsman's mind before he does something,' Shahrukh said.
At the IPL level, he looks to MS Dhoni as his captaincy idol. 'MS Dhoni has always been my idol in terms of captaincy. And the pattern in which I go about is whatever I have got from him,' he said.
IPL Setback and Technical Correction
Shahrukh's IPL 2026 campaign with Gujarat Titans was difficult — he was dropped from the playing XI mid-tournament. He later acknowledged a technical flaw that had affected his batting for seven to eight months. 'My front foot was going too far across which I never used to do that before,' he explained. He returned from the IPL and worked on correcting the issue, with the results showing clearly in the TNPL — including a 17-ball half-century against Dindigul Dragons, one of the quickest in the tournament's history.
What's Next
With the next IPL season on the horizon, Shahrukh will look to carry his revived TNPL form into India's premier T20 competition. His performance in the 2026 TNPL — both as captain and batter — has reinforced his standing as one of Tamil Nadu's most important white-ball cricketers.
