Zinc Football Academy (ZFA) fought back from a 2–1 deficit to secure a 2–2 draw against Mumbay FC in their second Group B fixture of the I-League 3 on 30 April at the SAI Turf Ground in Imphal. Substitute SK Asif's stunning 93rd-minute volley salvaged a point for the academy side in a fiercely contested match that showcased resilience and tactical flexibility.

Tactical battle in the opening phase

Mumbay FC dominated the early exchanges with their direct, physical approach centred on long balls and second-ball dominance. Recognising the threat, ZFA made a crucial tactical shift around the 15-minute mark, switching from a 4–1–4–1 formation to a 4–4–2 system designed to press higher and disrupt Mumbay FC's centre-backs during build-up play. The adjustment yielded immediate dividends, allowing ZFA to stabilise and contest the midfield more effectively.

ZFA takes the lead after the break

The first half ended goalless, but ZFA struck early in the second period. Winger Abith's dangerous left-flank cross found experienced striker Naro Hari Shrestha, who finished clinically to give ZFA a 1–0 lead. The goal reflected ZFA's improved control and momentum following their tactical recalibration.

Momentum swings multiple times

Mumbay FC responded swiftly, equalising from a set-piece minutes later to level the contest at 1–1. The match then took a decisive turn when ZFA's centre-back suffered a head injury during a critical phase of play. In the resulting disruption, Mumbay FC capitalised, winning possession inside the box and converting to take a 2–1 lead in the 92nd minute. The momentum appeared firmly with the visiting side.

Late drama seals a point

With time nearly expired, ZFA pushed forward in desperation. In the 93rd minute, substitute SK Asif produced a spectacular volley that rocketed past the goalkeeper, rescuing an unlikely point and capping an electrifying finale. The goal underscored ZFA's refusal to surrender despite being a goal down with seconds remaining.

Zinc Football Academy, established in 2017, has emerged as a significant development hub for grassroots football talent from rural India. Based in Zawar, the AIFF-accredited 3-star academy has trained over 5,000 young footballers since inception. The institution also operates India's largest residential football academy for girls, cementing its role as a premier training environment dedicated to youth development and excellence.

With four points from two matches, ZFA remains at the top of Group B, though their inability to convert dominance into a win will be a concern as the tournament progresses.
