Spanish MotoGP Competitor Espargaro Transitions from Motorcycle to Cycling

Madrid (Spain), Dec 16 (NationPress) Spanish motorcycle star Aleix Espargaro is set to keep riding on two wheels, but has transitioned from a motorized vehicle to a bicycle after Monday's news revealing that the MotoGP competitor has joined the Lidl-Trek cycling team.

"Lidl-Trek is excited to welcome Aleix Espargaro to our family (...) The three-time MotoGP race victor will act as a Lidl-Trek ambassador, participating in some of the most esteemed events on the calendar while promoting the sport of cycling to a broader audience," the cycling team confirmed via social media.

Espargaro has previously ridden for the Ducati, ART, Forward Yamaha, Suzuki, and Aprilia racing teams, spending the last eight years with the Italy-based Aprilia squad, according to reports from Xinhua.

The 35-year-old Spaniard is making his move into the cycling world after achieving three MotoGP victories and 12 podium finishes out of 255 MotoGP races, along with 17 in Moto2. He will balance his role with Lidl-Trek while also serving as a test rider for the Honda MotoGP team.

He is expected to be a part of the Lidl-Trek development team and will also compete in certain races, with the Spanish sports newspaper Diario AS noting that he will participate in the Tour of Burgos in early August.

"Cycling has been my passion for years and I've made the decision to leave MotoGP sooner than anticipated to join a program that aligns so closely with my enthusiasm. I am extremely thankful to Lidl-Trek for incorporating me into their family and for their support. I will give it my all," expressed the rider.
