Cincinnati, Aug 18 (NationPress) Iga Swiatek has made it to the final of the Cincinnati Open for the first time in her career, securing a 7-5, 6-3 victory against Elena Rybakina at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.

After facing defeats in the semifinals in Cincinnati over the past two years, No. 3 seed Swiatek managed to turn the match around after trailing 5-3 in the opening set. The Wimbledon champion clinched 10 of the last 13 games, marking her fourth consecutive victory over Rybakina and her sixth win in 10 meetings on tour, according to WTA.

Initially, Swiatek struggled to find her rhythm on P&G Center Court. The match commenced with six consecutive holds of serve before Rybakina took the lead by winning three straight games to create a two-game advantage.

Now, Swiatek has reached the finals in three of her last four tournaments, a remarkable achievement after a year without reaching a single final.

With this triumph over Rybakina, Swiatek has secured her position at the WTA Finals in Riyadh and has ascended back to No. 2 in the PIF WTA Rankings, placing her at the start of the US Open draw next week.

In Monday’s final, Swiatek will face No. 7 seed Jasmine Paolini as she aims for her 11th career WTA 1000 title.

Paolini has also reached the finals of the Cincinnati Open for the first time, defeating Veronika Kudermetova with a score of 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3 in the semifinals.

This marks Paolini's second WTA 1000 final of the season and the third of her career, having won her previous two finals. Notably, she is the first Italian woman in the Open era to reach the singles final in Cincinnati.

Swiatek enters the final against Paolini with a perfect record of 5-0. This will be their fifth professional encounter, as they previously faced off in the 2024 French Open final.

“She’s an amazing player and it’s always tough to compete against her. Her defensive skills are impressive, and her serve is strong too, so I'm expecting a challenging match. I enjoy the conditions here, and I'm hopeful for a great contest,” Paolini remarked regarding Swiatek.

Swiatek currently leads their head-to-head meetings 4-0, including a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the Bad Homburg semifinals this June.

“Jasmine plays quickly with a lot of spin and has a variety of skills, including net play. I will need to prepare tactically, but my main focus will be on my performance,” Swiatek stated.
