Kingston, July 19 (NationPress) As he approaches the final chapter of his international cricket journey, the explosive all-rounder Andre Russell has reflected on his performance during the 2016 T20 World Cup semi-final against India and the pride of securing two championships for West Indies in the T20 format as his standout moments representing his nation.

Russell, who played a vital role in West Indies' T20 World Cup victories in 2012 and 2016, is set to compete in his last two international matches on July 20 and 22, facing Australia in the initial T20I games at his beloved Sabina Park.

“Absolutely, the 2016 World Cup. That semi-final match against India where I guided the team to victory alongside Lendl Simmons. The pressure was palpable as we chased over 190 runs with a crowd favoring India,” he remarked.

“The pitch was excellent, and the confidence within the dressing room, along with the capable batters yet to come, empowered me to play my role without hesitation. Winning two World Cups brings an indescribable joy,” he added.

“You find yourself waking up after just two hours of sleep, yet feeling refreshed, eager to relive those cherished memories and positive remarks online. Those moments truly define my time with the West Indies,” Russell shared in a video from Cricket West Indies (CWI) post-training.

In his career spanning 84 T20Is for the West Indies, the 37-year-old has scored 1078 runs and taken 61 wickets. “It’s a remarkable feeling. I remember visiting Sabina Park as a child and now, after years of hard work, I can reflect on my achievements,” he noted.

“I have given my all with every opportunity I had to represent the West Indies. Ending my international career here against a formidable opponent like Australia feels just right. Seeing the reactions online has made me quite emotional, but I am confident in my decision to step away from international cricket,” he expressed.

Following the T20I matches in Jamaica, Russell will join Nicholas Pooran as another high-profile West Indies player retiring from international cricket in quick succession. Yet, he remains focused on clinching victories for the West Indies in these crucial matches.

“My priority is to ensure we secure victories in these two matches, giving our fans something to celebrate. Cricket has been sparse here recently, and I believe supporters will come out for any series played in Jamaica,” he stated.

“The last match leaves a lasting impression, whether good or bad. If we perform well and finish strong, it might rekindle cricket's popularity, and the love for the game will endure in Jamaica.”

“We have a Caribbean team capable of delivering exceptional performances; on a given day, we can compete with any team globally. Confidence isn’t an issue; it’s about performing consistently on that day,” he remarked.

“If we can replicate those winning days more frequently, we can create a positive shift moving forward. These guys have gained invaluable experience from various leagues, and integrating that into international cricket is crucial. We simply need to get it right more often.”
