Beijing, July 19 (NationPress) Chinese tennis sensation Zheng Qinwen, the gold medallist at the Paris Olympic Games, announced on social media this Saturday that she has successfully undergone surgery on her right elbow and is now in recovery.
"During my recent training and competition sessions, I experienced persistent discomfort in my right elbow," Zheng shared on her Chinese social media platform, as reported by Xinhua.
"Despite my efforts to manage the pain, it continued to affect my performance. Following consultations with elbow specialists, they advised that I should undergo complete minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery on my right elbow without delay to effectively address the issue."
"After thorough discussions with my team, we concluded that surgery was the most prudent option to ensure my prompt return to the court in optimal condition. The procedure took place yesterday and went exceptionally well, and I am now focused on my recovery," Zheng, who also clinched the gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, stated.
She further expressed, "In the upcoming period, I will dedicate myself to rehabilitation training, aiming for a 100 percent return to the court as quickly as possible. This brief pause is intended for a stronger comeback in the future. Thank you all for your support and patience. I look forward to returning to my full strength and meeting you on the court once again."
Recently, Zheng faced an early knockout at the Wimbledon tournament and subsequently withdrew from the WTA 500 event in Washington.
This season, Zheng reached a career-high ranking of No. 4 in the WTA singles standings.
Earlier in 2024, she reached the finals of the Australian Open and was the runner-up at the WTA Tour Finals. She also successfully defended her title at Palermo in July, overcoming second seed Karolína Muchová in a thrilling three-set final.
This year, Zheng struggled to replicate her Australian Open success, falling in the second round but did advance to the semifinals of the Italian Open.
