Amsterdam Flames picked 'adaptable players' in ETPL 2026 Draft: Steve Waugh
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Amsterdam Flames co-owner and Australian cricket legend Steve Waugh has revealed that versatility was the central criterion behind the franchise's selections in the inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL) 2026 Player Draft, with the side deliberately choosing multi-skilled cricketers over specialist batters to build a balanced squad.
The Strategy Behind the Selections
The Flames entered the draft already anchored by a formidable core — Australian T20I captain Mitchell Marsh, Steve Smith, Tim David, and Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards. With that batting firepower in place, the franchise used four of their six picks on all-rounders, led by Ireland international Curtis Campher as their first selection.
The remaining picks added Kyle Klein, Tim Pringle, Aryan Dutt, Jordan Neill, and Max O'Dowd to the roster. Waugh confirmed the approach was co-designed with head coach Ryan Cook.
'Yeah, we've got lots of all-rounders. That's what Ryan Cook, the coach, was really focused on. Players that are adaptable, that can play different roles,' Waugh said at a media interaction following the conclusion of the ETPL 2026 Player Draft.
What Waugh Said About Batting Depth
Despite the heavy tilt toward all-rounders in the draft, Waugh pushed back on any suggestion that the Flames are thin in the batting department. He pointed to the pre-existing stars as the batting foundation.
'At the end of the day, we've got some amazing players. There's international players who are specialist batsmen. Mitch Marsh, Steve Smith and Tim David. I mean, they're three outstanding players, probably three of the best batsmen in the world in T20 cricket,' he said.
Waugh also highlighted hidden batting value within the all-rounder group. 'I've been seeing Airee (Dipendra Singh Airee) from Nepal, excellent batsman, Curtis Campher. We've got lots of all-rounders. Yuvraj Samra from Canada is a specialist batsman. So we've got plenty of batsmen there,' he added.
Why All-Rounders Matter in T20 Cricket
The former Australia captain argued that role flexibility will be especially decisive in the ETPL, a new competition expected to feature varied conditions across Europe. The ability to switch between batting, bowling, and fielding roles mid-match, he said, is a structural advantage in the shortest format.
'We thought that the adaptability and versatility of the side, all-rounders are really, really important in T20 cricket. So we got the choices we wanted and we're really happy with those all-rounders,' Waugh noted.
Flames' Broader Squad Profile
The Amsterdam Flames enter the inaugural ETPL season blending proven international experience — drawn from Australia, Ireland, Netherlands, Nepal, and Canada — with emerging global talent. The franchise's bet on flexibility over conventional batting depth marks a distinctive approach in a competition where no team yet has a settled template for European T20 conditions.
