Wimbledon 2026 Set to Implement Video Review System, Following US and Australian Opens
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
London, March 21 (NationPress) The All-England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) announced on Saturday the introduction of a new Video Review System (VAR) for the upcoming 2026 Wimbledon Championship, scheduled from June 29 to July 12. This marks the inaugural use of VAR in the prestigious grass court event.
The tournament will implement a tennis-specific VAR across six courts during the Grand Slam matches. The technology will be accessible on both Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships, while the other courts including No.2 Court, No.3 Court, Court 12, and Court 18 will feature VAR only during men's and women's singles matches.
With this initiative, Wimbledon joins the ranks of the US Open and Australian Open as the third Grand Slam to adopt VAR technology.
The VAR system aims to assist players by ensuring the accuracy of on-field umpire decisions. It empowers athletes to challenge contentious calls, including double bounces, foul shots, and hindrances.
The US Open was the pioneer in using VAR, implementing it in 2023, and it has since been utilized on all courts at the nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments starting February 2025.
Wimbledon began its digital transformation last year with the introduction of Electronic Line Calling (ELC), which eliminated the need for line judges after 147 years. A new enhancement to the ELC will also debut in 2026, featuring visual indicators for live electronic line calls displayed on scoreboards across all courts, enhancing the spectator experience.
Additionally, AELTC plans to expand the Wimbledon tennis venue significantly, having received a favorable ruling from the London High Court on Friday that allows development without land-use restrictions.
Defending champions Jainik Sinner and Iga Swiatek will commence their title defenses on June 29.
