Liverpool, Sep 10 (NationPress) World Boxing Cup Astana gold medallist Nupur continued her impressive streak by clinching India’s first medal at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool on Wednesday. She achieved this by defeating Uzbekistan’s Oltinoy Sotimboeva with a score of 4:1 in the women’s 80+kg quarterfinals.
This match was tactical, with both boxers receiving a point penalty for excessive holding. Nupur started strong in the first round, though her opponent, a former World Youth silver medallist and bronze medallist in Astana, managed to narrow the gap in the second round.
However, the Indian boxer intensified her attack in the third and final round, maintaining her distance from her opponent to secure a spot in the semifinals.
Earlier on Tuesday night, three Indian boxers advanced to the quarterfinals, getting one step closer to ensuring a medal. Meenakshi (women’s 48kg) defeated China’s Wang Qiuping 5:0, Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (men’s 50kg) triumphed over England’s Reece Readshaw 5:0, and Abhinash Jamwal (men’s 65kg) dominated Dominican Republic’s Piter Ynoa Fernando de Jesus.
Unfortunately, Jugnoo (men’s 85kg) was the only Indian boxer to face defeat on Tuesday, losing 0:5 to Scotland’s Robert William McNulty in the pre-quarterfinals.
India has sent a 20-member squad to the inaugural World Championships, organized under the newly formed international governing body, World Boxing. The team is optimistic about a strong performance in both men’s and women’s divisions.
Later in the day, four more Indian boxers will aim for medals as two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen (women’s 51kg), Jaismine Lamboria (women’s 57kg), Pooja Rani (women’s 80kg), and Jamwal (men’s 65kg) prepare to enter the ring for their respective quarterfinals.
