Did Xiaohui Li Clinch Her First Grand Slam Title at Aus Open?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Melbourne, Jan 31 (NationPress) In a stunning performance, China's Xiaohui Li triumphed over Diede de Groot in straight sets, taking the women's wheelchair final and securing her first Grand Slam singles title at Melbourne Park on Saturday. Li showcased her prowess against her highly decorated Dutch rival, who made her return to the Kia Arena following hip surgery last year, winning decisively in just 50 minutes with scores of 6-1, 6-2.
The 26-year-old expressed her joy through a translator during her post-match press conference, but her radiant smile conveyed her happiness without words.
“At this moment, we are very satisfied,” stated Li, who also successfully defended her doubles title alongside Wang Ziying at Melbourne Park.
De Groot, who had dominated the Australian Open with four consecutive titles from 2021 to 2024, acknowledged her defeat to the No.3 seed, who was the runner-up to Yui Kamiji in last year's US Open final.
“First of all, a huge congratulations to Li — you truly outplayed me today. I had no chance. You performed exceptionally, and I look forward to seeing you in many more finals. Let's see if I can improve next time,” de Groot remarked.
Li's victory ended De Groot’s impressive winning streak in 2024, attributing her success to a well-planned strategy that culminated in her final point with a backhand winner.
“In general, our paces are quite similar. I focused on maintaining that pace and applied pressure whenever I had the chance to take the point away. Last season, my strategy wasn’t entirely clear. This year, we’ve improved our problem-solving skills, making our strategy more defined,” Li explained.
De Groot viewed her overall performance in the tournament as a significant achievement, especially given her long hiatus from competition.
“I must regard reaching the final as a personal victory after being away for one and a half years. I am truly proud of my progress and the hard work my team, especially Coach Dennis Sporrel, and I put into preparing for this event. Competing in the Kia Arena feels incredible. We have come a long way in wheelchair tennis, and we are still evolving,” she concluded.
