New Delhi, Aug 14 (NationPress) Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh expressed immense pride in his mentee Shubman Gill, who has displayed exceptional form while steering the team to a remarkable 2-2 drawn Test series against England.
Gill effectively silenced critics regarding his previous overseas Test performances by emerging as the top run-scorer in the series against England, accumulating an impressive 754 runs in 10 innings at an average of 75.40. His impressive tally included four centuries, earning him the title of India’s Player of the Series as recognized by England's head coach, Brendon McCullum.
Additionally, he was honored with the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for July 2025. “There were numerous doubts about his overseas statistics. Becoming the captain and scoring four Test hundreds is just remarkable. It shows how responsibility transforms a player,” said Yuvraj to ICC Digital during the ‘50 Days To Go’ event for the Women’s Cricket World Cup.
During this extended series in England, Gill batted in the number four position for the first time in Tests and came within just 20 runs of the legendary Sunil Gavaskar's record for the most runs in a Test series by an Indian cricketer.
The five-match Test series concluded with a 2-2 score, allowing Gill’s team to share the inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with Ben Stokes-led England. Yuvraj also commended the young Indian squad’s performance, especially in light of the recent retirements of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli earlier this year in May.
“I find this achievement fantastic. A young team facing England has immense pressure. Stepping into the shoes of legends like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma is no easy feat. The players embraced the challenge head-on,” he concluded.
