Zinedine Zidane has been officially appointed head coach of the French men's national football team on 28 July, with a four-year contract running through the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The French Football Federation (FFF) unveiled the 54-year-old at a specially convened press conference in Paris, ending weeks of speculation over who would succeed Didier Deschamps.

The Appointment

FFF president Philippe Diallo presented Zidane before the federation's executive committee following a formal committee meeting. Zidane becomes the 18th manager in the history of Les Bleus since Henri Guerin took charge in 1964. He will officially assume his duties on 1 August.

In a statement shared by the FFF, Zidane said: “I’ve often said it, there’s nothing greater than the French national team. So it’s a joy and obviously a great source of pride to become the manager of this French national team. It’s also a responsibility. I want to thank President Philippe Diallo, the Executive Committee, and the French Football Federation for their confidence and acknowledge the fourteen years of service from Didier and his staff. I also have a special thought today for all my coaches. Needless to say, I have high ambitions for the French national team!”

Succeeding Deschamps After 14 Years

Zidane inherits a squad from Didier Deschamps, France’s longest-serving manager, who concluded a 14-year tenure following the team’s semi-final exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Deschamps’ reign included the 2018 World Cup title and a 2022 World Cup final appearance, setting a high benchmark for his successor.

What Zidane’s Tenure Will Cover

Zidane’s immediate assignment is the 2026–2027 UEFA Nations League campaign. His mandate then extends through the Euro 2028 qualifiers, the 2028–2029 Nations League, and ultimately the 2030 World Cup qualifiers. He is expected to announce his full coaching staff in early September.

Zidane’s Coaching Pedigree

Widely regarded as France’s greatest ever player, Zidane also built a formidable coaching record at Real Madrid, winning three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles between 2016 and 2018. His appointment as national team manager is seen as a natural, if long-awaited, culmination of a career defined by excellence on both sides of the touchline. He has not managed a club side since leaving Real Madrid in 2021.
