Toronto, Aug 5 (NationPress) Top seed Alexander Zverev put an end to Alexei Popyrin's quest to defend his title at the Canadian Open, securing a 6-7(8), 6-4, 6-3 win and advancing to the semifinals.
This marks Zverev's 75th appearance in a tour-level semifinal, placing him alongside Novak Djokovic (196) as the only two active male players who have achieved such a milestone. By reaching his 21st semifinal at the Masters 1000s, his first since the previous year's Rolex Paris Masters, Zverev has surpassed Andy Roddick for seventh place in the series history since 1990, according to ATP.
Both players had opportunities with minibreak leads and set points, but a fortunate netcord allowed Popyrin to take the first set. Zverev made the crucial break early in the second set, establishing a 3-0 advantage that he maintained throughout. Although Popyrin managed to break back, Zverev ultimately secured the second set and surged ahead in the deciding set, again taking a 3-0 lead.
Zverev dominated on serve, winning 82% of his first-serve points and claiming 16 out of his last 17 points while serving. He wrapped up the match with a stunning drop-volley winner and is now set to face either Karen Khachanov or Alex Michelsen in the semifinals.
In other action, Khachanov fought back in the second set to defeat Michelsen 6-4, 7-6 and secure his place in the semifinals.
Michelsen started strong, breaking to take a 2-0 lead, but Khachanov quickly turned the tide, winning four consecutive games to take control of the first set. Despite having opportunities to extend the match with love-40 at 3-2 and two set points on Khachanov's serve at 5-4, Michelsen couldn't capitalize. Khachanov clinched the last five points in the tiebreaker to move on.
