Vijay inspects Nemmeli desalination plants on 6 July

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister S. Joseph Vijay visited Nemmeli in Chengalpattu district on 6 July 2026 to inspect the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) desalination plants with operational capacities of 110 MLD and 150 MLD.

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) operates two desalination facilities at Nemmeli — one with a capacity of 110 MLD and another of 150 MLD — which Chief Minister Vijay reviewed on 6 July 2026.

A new 400 MLD desalination plant is under construction at Perur in Chengalpattu district, Tamil Nadu. Chief Minister S. Joseph Vijay reviewed its construction progress during his 6 July 2026 site visit.

The existing Nemmeli plants (110 MLD + 150 MLD) and the upcoming Perur facility (400 MLD) would together bring Tamil Nadu's desalination capacity in the region to 660 MLD, according to the inspection visit on 6 July 2026.

Chief Minister S. Joseph Vijay reviewed water security infrastructure in Chengalpattu district on 6 July 2026, examining both the operational CMWSSB desalination units at Nemmeli and the under-construction facility at Perur.

Chengalpattu district hosts both the operational Nemmeli desalination plants and the new Perur facility, making it a critical hub for Chennai's long-term water supply strategy managed by the CMWSSB.

The CMWSSB desalination plants at Nemmeli, with a combined operational capacity of 260 MLD, process seawater into potable supply for Chennai. The facilities were reviewed by Chief Minister Vijay on 6 July 2026.

Once completed, the 400 MLD desalination plant at Perur, Chengalpattu, is set to significantly augment Chennai's water supply. Chief Minister S. Joseph Vijay monitored its construction status on 6 July 2026.

Chief Minister S. Joseph Vijay's on-site inspection of desalination facilities at Nemmeli and Perur on 6 July 2026 underscores Tamil Nadu's focus on water security through coastal desalination infrastructure managed by the CMWSSB.
