WHO confirms 101 Ebola cases in eastern DRC

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed on Sunday that the DRC's scaled-up Ebola surveillance had identified more than 900 suspected cases, of which 101 have been laboratory-confirmed, with the outbreak epicentre in Mongbwalu, Ituri province.

On 24 May 2026, medical workers in full protective suits transferred the body of an Ebola victim in Mongbwalu, a town in Ituri province, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, as response teams worked to contain the rapidly growing outbreak.

A health worker donned a full protective suit before conducting a safe burial of an Ebola victim in Mongbwalu on 24 May 2026 — a critical infection-control measure, as Ebola spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of the deceased.

Medical personnel in Mongbwalu were disinfected before an Ebola victim burial on 24 May 2026, reflecting strict WHO-recommended decontamination protocols as the DRC grapples with more than 900 suspected Ebola cases and at least 101 confirmed.
