Inside the 11.95 km Sleemanabad gravity tunnel

The interior of the 11.952 km Sleemanabad Tunnel, bored through the Vindhya mountain range in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh — designed to channel Narmada river water by gravity into the Son river basin, eliminating the need for pumps entirely.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav conducted an on-site inspection of the Sleemanabad Tunnel project on 17 July 2026, part of the Narmada Valley Development Project in the Jabalpur division of Madhya Pradesh.

The 11.952 km Sleemanabad Tunnel, carved through the Vindhya mountain range under the Narmada Valley Development Project, is engineered to transport Narmada river water entirely by gravity — with no pumps required — into the Son river basin.

Once operational, the Sleemanabad Tunnel is set to redirect Narmada river water by gravity into the Son river basin in Madhya Pradesh, potentially boosting irrigation capacity across the Katni region without additional energy costs.
