Why Are Over 1,300 Security Personnel Deployed in Rawalpindi?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Islamabad, Dec 21 (NationPress) In a proactive measure, more than 1,300 police officers and security personnel have been stationed in Rawalpindi to ensure the maintenance of law and order in anticipation of potential protests by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and a gathering by Jamaat-e-Islami at Liaquat Bagh, local news sources reported on Sunday, as per official statements.
This significant security presence comes amidst escalating tensions following a court ruling on Saturday that sentenced PTI founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan along with his spouse Bushra Bibi to 17 years in prison related to the Toshakhana-II case.
Leaders from PTI have rallied behind their leader, denouncing the verdict as unfounded. PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja indicated that Imran Khan has called on his supporters to gear up for a street movement, as reported by Pakistan's The Express Tribune.
Officials noted that this security deployment consists of two superintendents of police, seven deputy superintendents, 29 inspectors, 92 upper subordinates, and 340 constables.
Moreover, seven sections of Elite Force commandos, 22 Rapid Emergency and Security Operations personnel, and 400 members of the Anti-Riots Management Wing have been assigned to Rawalpindi to uphold law and order. Police have established 32 pickets, each overseen by an upper subordinate, while Elite Force Commandos conduct patrols.
Imran Khan has called for a nationwide protest and intends to contest the court’s ruling in the Islamabad High Court.
“I have instructed (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister) Sohail Afridi to prepare for this street movement. The entire nation must stand up for its rights,” Imran Khan stated, as per a conversation relayed by his lawyer shared on X, as reported by Dawn.
He acknowledged that the court's decision was anticipated but has directed his legal team to appeal to the high court against the ruling.
The Toshakhana-II corruption case pertains to the acquisition of an extravagant jewelry set, gifted to Imran Khan by the Saudi Crown Prince during an official visit in May 2021, at a minimal price.
The sentence was delivered by Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)’s special court during proceedings held at Adiala jail in Rawalpindi, where Imran Khan is currently detained.
According to the ruling, Imran Khan received a total of 17 years in prison, with 10 years of rigorous imprisonment under various sections of the Pakistan Penal Code and seven years under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Bushra Bibi was also sentenced to 17 years under the same legal provisions.
Additionally, both were fined Rs 16.4 million, with non-payment leading to extended imprisonment.
