Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 28 (NationPress) A total of 30 individuals have been detained by the West Bengal Police due to unrest and violence linked to a Ram Navami procession in Jangipur, located in the minority-majority district of Murshidabad, as confirmed by an official on Saturday.
Although the situation was swiftly managed following coordinated efforts by state police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), the locale momentarily resembled a battlefield.
Numerous individuals sustained injuries during the altercations, with some currently receiving treatment at a local medical facility. A source from the Jangipur Police district indicated that once calm was restored, joint teams from the state police and CAPF began pursuing those accountable for the disturbances.
From Friday evening through Saturday afternoon, the police apprehended around 30 suspects in connection with the unrest.
Authorities are also executing search operations to identify additional individuals involved in the violent incidents. Multiple FIRs, including a suo motu case, have been registered regarding the situation.
CAPF personnel are maintaining a continuous presence, conducting patrols and route marches in the impacted areas. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has requested a report from the state’s Director General of Police concerning the developments.
“Thanks to prompt action, overnight patrols, and swift arrests, normalcy has been reestablished in the region since Saturday morning. Businesses have reopened and life is returning to its usual rhythm. However, as a precaution, patrols and route marches will persist, along with prohibitory orders against gatherings exceeding a specified number in the affected zones,” stated a district police officer.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee critiqued the ECI, asserting that the Commission's decisions regarding frequent transfers, replacements, and deployment of experienced police officials to different states contributed to the heightened tensions in Jangipur on Friday.
“Had the former police officers, who possessed ample local experience, been present, such unrest would not have occurred,” the Chief Minister remarked during an election campaign rally on Saturday afternoon.
Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated in a media briefing in Kolkata that this year's violence during Ram Navami processions was significantly reduced compared to earlier years, attributing this to the Commission's replacement of allegedly biased personnel with more seasoned and impartial officers.
