Bhubaneswar, April 21 (NationPress) A collaborative effort between the West Bengal Police and the Jharsuguda District Police led to the arrest of two individuals implicated in the murder of a father-son pair - Harogobindo Das (70) and his son Chandan Das - by a mob during recent communal clashes in Jafrabad under Samsergunj police station in Murshidabad district, West Bengal, on April 12.

The suspects, known as Bani Israel and Sefaul Haque, are from Sulitala in the Samserganj area of Murshidabad. They were captured in the Banharpali region.

“Following the operations, six additional residents from Murshidabad were identified and detained by the combined team of Jharsuguda Police and West Bengal STF in the Bandhabahal area. These individuals are reportedly connected to the unrest in Murshidabad,” the police stated.

An official confirmed that those detained during the riots include Babul SKAbdul Khalek (24), Saba Karim (25), Roni Sk (23), Manarul Sk (54), and Azfarul Sk (21).

He noted that all of the detainees are residents of the Murshidabad district.

Inspector General of Police (Northern Range), Himansu Kumar Lal, informed reporters that the suspects fled to Odisha following the communal violence in Murshidabad and had been hiding in the Bandhabahal area under the Banharpali police jurisdiction since then.

IGP Lal elaborated that the Jharsuguda police executed several raids in the Bandhabahal area during the night of April 20 and 21, following a request from the West Bengal Police, resulting in the arrest of Sefaul Haque and Bani Israel.

“A firearm was recovered from the two suspects, who attempted to escape from police custody. The police fired four warning shots into the air to prevent their escape. Thanks to the swift action of the police, both suspects were successfully apprehended,” reported IGP Lal.

A case has been filed against the suspects at the Banharpali Police for making threats to police officials while attempting to flee and for illegal possession of firearms.

IGP Lal further stated that the West Bengal Police will obtain custody of the suspects following court proceedings.

It is noteworthy that protests have erupted across various regions of the country following the introduction of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, with demonstrations occurring in West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Chennai, and Bengaluru.
