Kolkata, April 15 (NationPress) Two individuals have been detained in connection with the murder of Hargobindo Das and his son Chandan Das, which occurred in Samserganj, located in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal last week.

The tragic incident took place at a time when the entire district was experiencing unrest due to protests against the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act, which escalated into violence.

According to the Additional Director General of Police (South Bengal), Supratim Sarkar, the arrests were made after extensive night-long search operations. One suspect was apprehended in Birbhum district, while the other was caught in the Suti area of Murshidabad.

However, the authorities have not revealed the identities of the arrested individuals.

“They were captured following a night-long search. One was detained from Murarai in Birbhum district late Monday night, and based on the lead provided by him, the second suspect was arrested from Suti in Murshidabad on Tuesday morning,” Sarkar informed the media.

Reports indicate that the two arrested are cousins.

The suspects will be presented in a district court on Tuesday, where the public prosecutor is expected to request police custody for further investigation.

Meanwhile, the law and order situation has begun to stabilize in the affected areas of Murshidabad, such as Jangipur, Samserganj, Dhulian, and Suti as of Tuesday morning, coinciding with the Bengali New Year.

Several shops that had been closed for most of the past week reopened on Tuesday morning.

However, customer traffic and the usual street gatherings remain significantly lower than usual.

Central Armed Police Forces and state police continue their patrols to reassure the community.

Internet services are still suspended in the troubled areas of Murshidabad and certain regions of adjacent Malda and Birbhum districts.

The total arrests related to the violence and vandalism in Murshidabad have now exceeded 200.
