Ahmedabad, Nov 25 (NationPress) In a determined effort to tackle habitual offenders and public nuisance throughout the city, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch, working alongside the Mahila Cell, has successfully concluded a five-day special operation aimed at reinstating order in sensitive areas. Teams were deployed in regions notorious for frequent congregations of “taporis” and “romeos”, zeroing in on spots where residents—particularly women—had reported ongoing harassment or disruptive activities.

The escalated surveillance and prompt field actions resulted in 28 cases being filed against those engaged in public disturbances. Furthermore, enforcement units seized over 45 vehicles, predominantly SUVs, that were commonly utilized by the offenders to roam or instigate chaos in public domains.

Authorities indicated that this operation signifies the sustained commitment of both the Crime Branch and the Mahila Cell to combat harassment, discourage repeat offenders, and ensure safer streets for all citizens.

Legal actions are set to be initiated against everyone apprehended during this operation. Crime against women in Gujarat remains a pressing issue, with incidents of harassment, domestic violence, sexual assault, and cybercrimes continuing to pose challenges to law enforcement.

In response, the state government has enhanced initiatives through dedicated Mahila Police Stations, the 181 women’s helpline, fast-track courts for sexual offense cases, and bolstered the Mahila Cell within the Crime Branch to address harassment, stalking, and public nuisances.

Additionally, the government has broadened CCTV surveillance in urban areas, launched awareness and self-defense programs, and advocated for quicker FIR registration alongside stricter monitoring of repeat offenders. Collectively, these efforts aim to elevate women’s safety, expedite justice delivery, and cultivate safer public environments across Gujarat.

The penalties for crimes against women in India are defined under stringent sections of the Indian Penal Code and specialized legislations such as the POCSO Act and the Criminal Law (Amendment) Acts of 2013 and 2018.

Rape carries a minimum sentence of 10 years, which can extend to life imprisonment, while gang rape or rape involving minors may result in a life sentence until natural death or even the death penalty. Assault with intent to outrage modesty (Section 354) is punishable by 1 to 5 years’ imprisonment, whereas stalking and harassment may incur sentences of 3 to 5 years.
