New Delhi, Nov 30 (NationPress) Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav vehemently condemned the Uttar Pradesh government's alleged initiative to commercialise Janeshwar Mishra Park in Lucknow, recognized as Asia's largest urban park, by permitting extensive private events and weddings starting January 2026.
His remarks were triggered by a promotional advertisement for a proposed venue named 'Janeshwar Greens', which promotes vast event lawns, significant guest capacity, and designated parking within the park.
The advertisement suggests that the upcoming commercial area will feature event lawns covering nearly 300,000 square feet, capable of accommodating up to 10,000 guests and parking for 3,000 vehicles.
Yadav argued that this level of commercialisation would drastically change the park's natural environment, replacing public spaces with post-event debris, noise, and pollution. He characterized the initiative as an effort to transform an essential ecological resource into a source of private profit.
The former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, who inaugurated the park in 2014, cautioned that this was merely the start of what he described as the BJP government's insatiable desire to encroach on public areas.
He warned that if this trend is allowed to continue, it could set a dangerous precedent for similar takeovers of community parks throughout Lucknow and the rest of the state.
In a strongly worded post on X directed at the residents of Uttar Pradesh, Yadav called for a unified, non-political resistance to safeguard the city’s green spaces.
His message stated: "Dear residents of Lucknow and those from UP, Beware! The BJP government is attempting to exploit Lucknow's 'Green-Heart', Janeshwar Mishra Park, driven by greed. The people of Lucknow deserve access to clean air and greenery. We must unite in opposition to this initiative as a citizens' movement; if we act alone, the BJP will politicize our efforts for their benefit."
He continued to encourage widespread involvement: "Thus, I urge all Lucknow residents, environmental advocates, the elderly who cherish parks, families, and health-conscious individuals to join together and protect Lucknow’s greenery."
Yadav also issued a warning regarding potential future consequences: "This is just the beginning of the BJP's greed; today it’s one park, but tomorrow, every local park in Lucknow and UP could be at risk. Residents will be left with nothing but the stench of waste and debris after these events. If we fail to act swiftly, it will become increasingly hard for Lucknow’s residents to breathe."
"Beware: the BJP must not turn this park into a parking lot! If the BJP is ousted, we can breathe freely!" he concluded.
The response from the Uttar Pradesh government regarding Yadav's allegations is still pending.
