Raipur, April 6 (NationPress) In a significant ruling that has reverberated through Chhattisgarh's political sphere, the High Court has sentenced former MLA Amit Jogi, the son of the state’s inaugural Chief Minister, the late Ajit Jogi, to life imprisonment while also imposing a fine of Rs 1,000 in connection with the infamous 2003 murder case involving senior NCP leader Ram Avatar Jaggi.

A division bench led by Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Arvind Kumar Verma delivered the sentence after reviewing the CBI’s appeal, a revision petition from the victim’s son Satish Jaggi, and a request for a harsher penalty.

This ruling overturned the trial court’s prior acquittal of Jogi on May 31, 2007, and determined him guilty of criminal conspiracy to murder under Section 120-B of the IPC, alongside Sections 302/34 (murder) and 427/34 (mischief) of the Indian Penal Code.

On June 4, 2003, Ram Avatar Jaggi, a distinguished businessman and NCP figure, was fatally shot in Raipur while Ajit Jogi was serving as the Chief Minister of the newly established state. Initially classified as a robbery, the case saw five arrests; however, following the BJP's rise to power, the investigation was handed over to the CBI on January 22, 2004.

The CBI suggested a broader conspiracy implicating Amit Jogi and several others, including Yahya Dhebar, Abhay Goyal, and Firoz Siddiqui. In total, 31 individuals were accused in this case.

During the 2007 trial, 28 defendants were found guilty and sentenced, whereas Amit Jogi was acquitted.

Satish Jaggi challenged the acquittal before the Supreme Court, which subsequently directed the Chhattisgarh High Court to reassess the case.

After prolonged legal battles, the High Court has now deemed Amit Jogi guilty, noting that the evidence leading to the conviction of the other 28 defendants could not be disregarded in his situation.

The court has mandated Amit Jogi to report to the authorities within three weeks. This judgment marks a pivotal moment in one of Chhattisgarh’s most notable and politically charged criminal cases, which has been pending in the judicial system for nearly 23 years.

The ruling is anticipated to have considerable political implications in the upcoming elections within the state.

The family of Ram Avatar Jaggi has expressed their approval of the decision, labeling it as a long-awaited achievement of justice.

Further legal avenues, including a potential appeal to the Supreme Court, remain available to the convicted.

This case once again underscores the intricate relationship between politics and crime in the early years following the state's formation.
