Chhattisgarh High Court Orders Amit Jogi's Surrender in 23-Year-Old Murder Case
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Raipur, April 2 (NationPress) In a notable turn of events, the Chhattisgarh High Court has dealt a significant setback to Amit Jogi, the son of former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, by declaring him guilty and mandating his surrender within a three-week timeframe in the infamous Ramavtar Jaggi murder case.
A division bench led by Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha issued this order while reviewing the proceedings of the 2003 murder of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) figure Ramavtar Jaggi.
The court has instructed Amit Jogi to present himself before the court within the designated period.
This case traces back to June 4, 2003, when Ramavtar Jaggi was shot dead in Raipur. A total of 31 individuals were implicated in this shocking political murder. Two of these individuals, Baltu Pathak and Surendra Singh, became approvers and testified for the prosecution.
While 28 of the accused were convicted by the trial court, Amit Jogi was acquitted due to a lack of sufficient evidence.
Subsequently, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) submitted a comprehensive 11,000-page investigation report, which included allegations against Amit Jogi.
The case underwent various legal challenges; Satish Jaggi, the son of the deceased leader, contested the acquittal in the Supreme Court. Initially, the apex court granted a stay in favor of Amit Jogi, later transferring the case back to the Chhattisgarh High Court for a thorough review.
After years of legal battles, the Supreme Court in November 2025 accepted a considerable delay by the CBI and instructed the High Court to reevaluate the appeal against Amit Jogi’s acquittal based on its merits.
The High Court has now reopened the case, leading to the recent order for his surrender.
In response to the ruling, Amit Jogi expressed his deep disappointment on his X account.
In a message to his “Dear Friends and Well-wishers,” he stated: “Today, the Honourable High Court allowed the CBI's appeal against me in a mere 40 minutes - without granting me an opportunity to be heard. I regret that a person whom the court had previously acquitted has now been convicted without being granted a single opportunity for a hearing. This is unprecedented. The court has granted me a period of three weeks to surrender. I feel that a grave injustice has been done to me. I have full faith that I will certainly receive justice from the Supreme Court. I repose my complete faith in the judicial system. I am moving forward with absolute peace, faith, and patience. Truth shall surely prevail. I urge you all to pray for me and continue to bestow your blessings upon me. Jai Chhattisgarh.”
This murder case had sent shockwaves throughout Chhattisgarh during Ajit Jogi's tenure as Chief Minister. At the time, allegations suggested a political conspiracy, although the trial court had acquitted Amit Jogi while convicting others.
Amit Jogi’s legal team is expected to pursue various options, including potential appeals.
