ABVP wins 13 Odisha universities; Amit Shah says youth backs 'Nation First'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday, 17 October 2026, congratulated the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on its sweeping performance in the Odisha student union elections, asserting that the results sent an unambiguous message — the country's youth stands firmly with the 'Nation First' ideology. The campus polls, held on 15 October across 337 higher education institutions in Odisha, were the first such elections in the state in eight years.
Shah's Reaction on X
In a post on social media platform X, Shah framed the ABVP's victories as part of a larger national trend, citing the organisation's earlier wins at Panjab University and Delhi University. 'Heartfelt congratulations to all the karyakartas of ABVP Odisha for achieving a resounding victory in the Odisha Student Parliament elections. First Panjab University, then Delhi University, and now in 13 universities of Odisha, this victory of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad clearly conveys the message that the youth power of the country is firmly aligned not with the powerful forces that spread falsehoods, illusions, and chaos, but with the 'Nation First' ideology,' Shah posted.
BJP State Chief Echoes the Sentiment
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Odisha unit President Nitin Nabin had earlier on Friday congratulated the winning ABVP candidates, describing the result as a rejection of what he called the politics of anarchy. 'This victory reflects the unwavering faith of the youth in nationalism and national interests, rejecting the politics of spreading anarchy in the name of young people. Inspired by the ideals of Swami Vivekananda, the youth of India today are moving forward with a resolve to build the nation and are committed to playing an important role in realising the goal of Viksit Bharat @ 2047,' Nabin said.
Scale and Turnout of the Polls
The elections — conducted after a gap of eight years in Odisha — saw participation across 337 higher education institutions, recording an overall voter turnout of 56 per cent. A total of 3,610 candidates emerged victorious, comprising 3,453 from colleges and 157 from universities, according to data provided by authorities.
What the Result Signals
The ABVP's back-to-back successes — at Panjab University, Delhi University, and now across 13 universities in Odisha — suggest a sustained run for the RSS-affiliated student body in campus elections this academic year. Notably, student union polls are often read as early indicators of youth sentiment ahead of state and national electoral cycles. The Odisha result comes months after the BJP's strong showing in the state assembly elections, lending political weight to an otherwise routine campus contest.
