Changlang (Arunachal Pradesh), Oct 6 (NationPress) Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy, along with the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, officially launched the Namchik Namphuk Coal Mine in Changlang district on Monday, marking a historic achievement as the inaugural commercial coal mining endeavor in the state.
This significant occasion heralds a transformative phase in Arunachal Pradesh’s economic landscape, firmly establishing it on India’s coal and energy map, as stated by the minister.
During his address, Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy characterized the inauguration as “a beacon of new hope and a pivotal milestone towards energy security and regional advancement in the North East,” revealing that the Namchik Namphuk Coal Mine possesses reserves of 1.5 crore tonnes of coal and has officially commenced operations today.
The minister emphasized that the Namchik Namphuk Coal Mine will be instrumental in propelling the development of the North East region while reinforcing India’s path towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat. This initiative is expected to not only create local employment opportunities and foster industrial growth but also significantly bolster the region’s contribution to the nation’s energy security and self-sufficiency.
The event also marked the formal transfer of the mining lease and the initiation of the tools and machinery from CPPL to the Namchik-Namphuk Central Coal Block, marking the start of mining activities.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu acknowledged the importance of the Namchik Namphuk Coal Mine, highlighting its potential to enhance the state’s economy, generate job opportunities, and create a consistent revenue stream for Arunachal Pradesh. He expressed optimism that this venture will empower local communities and attract future investments in the state’s mining and industrial sectors.
The launch also signifies a crackdown on illegal mining, exploitation, and resource wastage, ensuring that development is accompanied by transparency and accountability for the benefit of the people.
For the first time, critical minerals are being unlocked in Arunachal, with two blocks in the state and five in Assam available for auction, essential for future technological advancements and national security.
Officials have been urged to expedite operations, which will generate employment and prosperity for local youth, supporting the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative through harnessing local resources, jobs, and strengths, according to an official statement.
While promoting growth, the Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that mining in the Northeast proceeds without compromising ecological integrity. This region, renowned for its lush valleys, rivers, and vibrant communities, aims to set a global standard for sustainable mining practices.
Already, the coal sector has rehabilitated 57,000 hectares of land and aims to reclaim an additional 16,000 hectares by 2030 under the Mission Green Coal Regions. Mining operations are being executed with economic, ecological, and community responsibilities in mind, driven by a spirit of Jan Bhagidaari, the statement added.
