Itanagar, July 31 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, highlighted on Thursday that the state is on its way to becoming the hydropower capital of India with an impressive potential of 56,000 megawatts of hydropower.
Emphasizing the significant energy capabilities of Arunachal Pradesh and its pivotal role in driving economic growth and enhancing community welfare, the Chief Minister shared on the social media platform X: “With 56,000 megawatts of hydro potential, Arunachal is not just emerging as the hydro capital of India, but is also a symbol of how natural beauty can coexist with modern advancements.”
CM Khandu provided updates on several major hydropower initiatives, mentioning that the 600 MW Kameng Hydroelectric Project in West Kameng district has already been completed.
This power initiative was launched by the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO), a state-owned enterprise.
The Chief Minister further disclosed that the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, which has a generation capacity of 2,000 MW, is approaching its commissioning phase.
Situated on the Subansiri River, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, this project lies on the border between Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
It is being developed by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), a government enterprise classified as Mini Ratna.
This run-of-the-river project features a concrete gravity dam and a surface powerhouse that accommodates eight 250 MW Francis turbines.
Recently, the Union Power Secretary, Pankaj Agarwal, conducted a review of the final phases of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project in Kamle district.
Agarwal assured state officials of federal support for the crucial infrastructure being developed at Dollungmukh, located along the Arunachal-Assam border.
He was joined by NHPC Chairman-cum-Managing Director Rajendra Prasad Goyal and Director (Projects) Sanjay Kumar Singh.
In his post, Khandu mentioned that the 2,880 MW Dibang Multipurpose Hydropower Project is poised to become the largest hydropower initiative in India, located in the Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh.
The foundation stone for the 2,880 MW Dibang Multipurpose Hydropower Project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Viksit Bharat Viksit North East Program in Itanagar on March 9, 2024.
Khandu noted that there are 13 additional power projects planned, with a total generation capacity of 15,000 MW, set to be realized in the next three years.
“As these projects come online, free power worth Rs 4,171 crore will be returned to the state, with Rs 735 crore directly invested into the welfare and development of local communities. The state government is expected to receive Rs 1,884 crore in annual dividends post-commissioning, further enhancing our economy,” Khandu stated on X.
He concluded by asserting that this endeavor extends beyond mere power generation; it is fundamentally about improving the quality of life for the people.
